ENGLISH VERSION FOLLOWS THE FRENCH ONE!!!
Lorsque j'ai vu l'affiche des Chants de Mandrin, je savais que je voulais voir ce film. Parce que la complainte de Mandrin est un amour de jeunesse, une obsession d'enfant qui ne m'a jamais quittée, et qui après un vague sondage est commune à beaucoup d'autres personnes.
Les
Chants de Mandrin raconte donc, comment les compagnons de
Mandrin, après sa mort repartirent en campagne de contrebande, et
luttèrent pour la mémoire, et les idéaux de leur ancien camarade.
Les fermiers généraux faisaient circuler un livre accusant le
contrebandier des pires horreurs, et ce film raconte
l'histoire de leur contre attaque. Il s'agit de montrer les
rouages de la communication aux dix huitième siècle.
L'histoire
commence par un jeune déserteur poursuivi par les soldats du roi.
Belisard le trouve à moitié mort, et apprenant par les soldats
qu'il est déserteur, décide de se battre contre eux, et de recruter
le jeune homme. La deuxième scène et la rencontre du marquis et du
colporteur. Le colporteur diffusait la presse, et les informations
dans les campagnes, s'est donc grâce à lui que le marquis va
rencontrer les Mandrins, et que ceux-ci vont lui transmettre le
testament politique de Mandrin, les chants qu'ils ont écrit, et
c'est lui enfin qui écrira cette complainte qui est arrivée intacte
jusqu'à nous.
Ce
film de plein air, respire d'un bout à l'autre, le parler y est
contemporain avec quelques expression du dix-huitième. Les costumes,
et les décors y sont simples mais superbes comme le jeu et le visage
des acteurs.
Pour moi il représente le processus de mise en
circulation d'une idée, d'une contre propagande. On voit tout:
de la fabrication du papier, l'impression des documents à la
distribution des livres, c'est le même processus qu'avec
internet sauf qu'à l'époque, une seule idée mettait des mois à
circuler alors que de nos jours des centaines de milliers se
propagent chaque secondes, et bien au dix-huitième il fallait aussi
se battre et utiliser son fusil pour qu'une idée atteigne une
personne. Ce film libertaire et joyeux m'a fait du bien, et m'a
émue parce que ce qu'il représente au delà du bien et du mal,
c'est la petite graine plantée qui devint un révolution, c'est
la représentation de toutes les idées minoritaires qui cherchent à
se déployer. Et la puissance d'une chanson telle que la
Complainte de Mandrin n'a pas été usée par les siècles. Ce film
représente la persistance et la beauté de l'espoir!

knew that I wanted to see this film.
First because as I wrote before, I am like a tree with open air roots and need to find my way back into the soil, with a more organic and original cinema.
Then Mandrin's lament is the first song I ever got obsessed with. As it is very French I am going to explain a bit more: Mandrin was a smuggler who at the beginning of the eighteenth century fought against the king's taxmen . Very popular he was condemned to death in Valence... his lament was written afterward: clever, impish and sorrowful at the end.

I had
it on a disc with plenty other classical folk ballads, and at that time ( I was
six or seven) I thought that it was the only contemporaneous song of
the disc, and I visualised (which was very dramatic) Mandrin singing it from the gallows before being hung. After a quick survey I realised that I am far from being the only one who as a child was obsessed by
this pre French revolution song of injustice! ( Ameur-Zaïmeche says that he discovered the lament at school (with a rigorous teacher), and learnt from it that French people were not all oppressors)
Smuggler's
Song relates the story of the spreading of Mandrin's ideals. In these times the taxmen were
distributing a propaganda book ( as an attempt to destroy his post-mortem popularity). They were accusing the thief of
murdering widows and orphans. This film displays the adventure of a communication strategy taking place in France 's eighteenth century .
It begins by a young deserter of the king's army trying to escape with a bullet in his chest. In the beautiful background of mother nature he hides and then faints behind a grove. Belisard
(played by the film's director Rabah
Ameur-Zaïmeche) one
of the mandrins, finds him. When he learns from the soldiers that the young runaway is a
deserter, he decides to save him and with his companions kills the three soldiers. The
second scene is the unlikely meeting of a marquis and a pedlar.
Pedlars were the eighteenth century's internet, they carried
newspaper, paper and feathers, books, news, forbidden goods... the
marquis wants to meet Belisard he has a message for him, and knew
Mandrin... He's the one in this film who is going to write the song
that I was obsessed with.
This
outdoor film, breathes from beginning to end, the characters speak and
swear like me and my friends only using a few eighteenth century
expressions. The outfits, the settings are simples but superb,
likewise is the acting and the lively and beautiful faces of the
actors. To me the main motif of this opus is the process of circulation of an idea,
of a counter propaganda. And of this everything is showed from the making of the paper, printing of the books, to book distribution... and the guns and necessary fights !
This
film soothed me, and moved me because it shows how the seed of what became a revolution, was planted. Mandrin's lament is still obsessing thousands of kids, the emotions this song still disseminates are strong and fresh and might forever represent the persistance and beauty of hope
against injustice!
