"For the story" HBO's Girls

.

I am very passionate about HBO's Girls. I spent half an hour this week explaining to my best friend what happened in episode six, how it echoed our lives and I tried to convey in what Lena Dunham's writing is amazing. I also spent quite a while reading an article about what is new in this show in the treatment of sex as part of the story and not something being a end in itself ( new to America, actually, I can think of a few French films where the treatment of sex is part of the intrigue and revealing about the characters' expectations, traumas, personalities...).
Critics tend to compare Girls to pre-existing shows or genres (SATC and romantic comedies), and determining it from that... I don't see the point. I love Girls because instead of being referential it's using life as its material
Girls' first episode starts when Hannah's parents announce to her that they will stop supporting her, that she has to find a job. Hannah lives in New York she shares an apartment with her best friend and wants to be a writer. She has this strange relationship with Adam who never answers her texts, is quite unavailable but has an original mind and will use his imagination in everything... Their relation which is mainly physical, is of creative and selfish sex but it contains lots of storytelling and that's what passionates Hannah and passionates me watching this show. This whole series is about the thing that is the most interesting to me: the deeply strange relationship between art and life, life and art.
Girls is honest, there are no stupid twists, no “Robert McKee” effing tricks, it takes it's rhythm from life, and if nothing happens, if life is boring, let's anyway explore and question this boredom with grace.
When Hannah works in an office where her Santa lookalike boss has an habit of groping and massaging female employees breasts, instead of being shocked she listens to her friend Jessa's advice about fucking the old man just to see where it leads, “for the story”

This is what I love about Girls, it takes place in an environment that we recognise as real and boring, and then it becomes what the characters are trying to do with it, how they try to write their own stories while they are in control of nothing and are worried about the rent.

Bored by (American) Dreams

La version française suit la version anglaise!!!!!

Lately I started to feel some detachment toward American fictions. I think that it began with Inception, a clever film it is, quite ugly, but with a very clever script that maintained my brain highly wired, focused and electric. But then after a good night of sleep the film was completely irrelevant, why? Because being a world in itself with its own rules it didn't apply in anyway to real life, it didn't bring any knowledge, any reflection, any wisdom about human and dreams... it was fun while it lasted but instead of paying 10 euros to watch pure entertainment I should have paid the same price to see a real original opus. This feeling has been growing up in me, and maybe you noticed that I actually have not written about American cinema for a little while (Though I will keep an interest on film-makers like Coppola senior, Jim Jarmush, Charlie Kaufman, Wes Anderson, James Gray or Vincent Gallo if he does a new film).

The thing is, being also very fond of American television, the same feeling started to apply to the magic box. Some shows which were absolutely brilliant stopped running after one season ( Rubicon) while boring repetitive stuff goes on for ever and ever.
Lately, televisionwise, I am passionate about what United Kingdom offers: Downton Abbey, Sherlock, The Shadow Line, Injustice, Misfits, Fresh Meat, Black Mirror, Single Father, Doctor Who, the Hour...
Dialogues are witty and fun, some series like Black Mirror are extremely daring in a sick way, they wake you up, make you reflect about the world we live in. They're original, brilliantly written and played, and last but not least a real work of “mise en scène” is done, remember I was absolutely amazed by the first episodes of the shadow line, the work on the sound, how it reminded me of Melville's work!

I need to be fed and I am tired of superheroes (politics through Batman who's democratic enough to leave the power to normal human beings even through they're not as clever as he is), romantic comedies where complicated human problems are solved in a glimpse, attitude, categorisation of humans (geek, freaks, nerds, jocks...)and so on...
at the moment I prefer the sloppiness, intellectuality, creativity, intimacy of the rest of the world's cinema, but American productions independent or mainstream turn into sets of rules of storytelling that I grew deeply bored with. Do something about it guys get rid of your Robert McKee books!

Dernièrement j'ai commencé à me détacher des fictions américaines.

Heureusement ce qui me sauve c'est la télé anglaise: Downton Abbey, Sherlock, The Shadow Line, Injustice, Misfits, Fresh Meat, Black Mirror, Single Father, Doctor Who, the Hour...

An update on TV shows : What to follow!

I am going to write a little more about series, because lately I’ve been watching lots of them, especially because that it’s September, and new shows are aired, and all shows presents new seasons. So here’s my update if you want to make your choice, on what to follow:

The new ones:
Though the trailer of Community seemed very cool, after two episodes I can say that I am not very interested by this show. The main character seems the only one with a brain and some wit; the others are just losers and human clichés. There is no way I can connect with them, so I am not interested.

Glee: at first I thought that it was a 2009 version of Popular, with the same tone, same kind of characters, now it’s growing on me, and though I am not a fan of r’n’b, and cheesy music, I love the original angle, and original humour of this show. What strikes me as particularly original is the fact that for once, in teenage series, the teacher’s world is depicted. It’s probably to please the 30/40 generation by showing other preoccupations than the students’one! I will go on following Glee.

Eastwick: Oh god it’s exactly like in the film, I really hate when they take a film and make a series out of it. I love the film and I don’t want to see a lamer version of it!

I was sceptic at the beginning of Flash Forward: another cop story, the casting mainly made of second part of other series, that didn’t seem too bright. But it blew my mind. Everyone in the world collapsed at the same time and saw their future in six months! I am already addicted and can’t wait for the second episode: a big WOW!

Modern Family, starts showing three kinds of families, and filmed like a confession TV show, it is subtle, quite hilarious, and remarkably written; I also want more of it! A positive plus: Al Bundy ( Ed O’neil) is back! I love this actor. Here he’s married to a very hot and young South American girl!

And at Last my favourite of the new series Bored to Death starring and written by Jason Shwartzman, it’s witty, intelligent, funny and classy. Jonathan Ames ( shwartzman) is a young writer unable to write his second novel. His girlfriend leaves him because she considers that he drinks and smokes too much! Of course he doesn’t, she’s just very up tied (in my opinion) nevertheless, he is very unhappy and write an add on the Craig list to be a private detective. He runs everywhere with a copy of Farewell my lovely. I would say that Bored to Death is the perfect mix of Woody Allen’s Manhattan Murder Mystery and Wes Anderson Rushmore! Don’t miss it!

Now the old series:

The end of the third season of Heroes was very disappointing, why did they changed Sylar into Nathan Petrelli? A bit of Claire’s blood would have saved him, like it did to Noah in second season. Now we’re stuck with this in between character, and it doesn’t seem that the show has a pattern anymore, besides getting more complicated and unclear. The only positive thing is the arrival of the carnival, but will it be enough to motivate me going on with this show: it’s far from being sure!

House MD is the TV show I am the most addicted to, and the end of series 5 drove me crazy. I was expecting so much more from the two first episodes, much more, than a cliché of mental institution where he didn’t belong, and a cliché of love story! I really hope that the writers will warm up the sexual tension between Cuddy and House!

Californication is just absolutely exciting, first by the casting, Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick) being gay and in love with Hank. Kathleen Turner, Charlie’s new boss who sexually harass him. Hank trying (or not, to be a teacher) well Californication is still excellent and sexy as hell! Though little Becca is a little under everyone’s level with acting!

The first episode of Gossip Girl’s new season was almost boring, oh I wish Vanessa could disappear from the show, she’s a boring character, and Serena too! The second was much better with Blair trying to be the queen of NYU and miserably failing! Gossip Girl stays entertaining and I will go on following it!

Last but not least, the first episode of this new season of How I Met Your Mother was hilarious, and there’s no way I will ever stop watching this show. Ted ( the only boring character of the series) start to teach at Columbia, Barney and Robin created a new style of relationship and are forced by Lily and Marshall to have “ the talk”, I won’t say much, it’s just the funniest show ever!
