Pour une fois le concept de ce blog ( écrire les articles en français et anglais) et le film dont je vais parler se rejoignent.

Voici un documentaire sur Louise Bourgeois, artiste française de naissance qui vécu à partir de 1938 et jusqu'à sa mort en 2010 aux Etats Unis. LB parcourt ce documentaire avec son extraordinaire talent, intelligence et son accent français à couper au couteau.

La force de ce documentaire est de majoritairement laisser l'artiste s'exprimer. Le film n'est pas divisé selon sa biographie mais selon les trois thèmes principaux de son oeuvre qui recoupent sa biographie. Parce qu'après tout comme dit son assistant Jerry dans le film, l'oeuvre de Louise Bourgeois était une façon de transformer un journal intime en Art.

Le film commence par montrer LB dans son atelier, et elle explique ce que cela signifie pour elle de sculpter. Elle tient sa statue comme si elle était aveugle, complétement focalisé sur le sens du toucher. La réalisatrice veut apporter son grain de sel en parlant de la différence entre les hommes et les femmes, et LB, lui rétorque poliment mais d'un ton ferme que ça n'est pas ce qu'elle était en train de dire puis enchaîne:

"But it is diffficult to be a woman and to be likeable, you see, this desire to be likeable it is really a pain in the neck, how are you going to be likeable and be yourself? »

Et là on voit la problématique d'une partie de la vie de Louise Bourgeois, celle où elle était dans le doute sur sa capacité à être une artiste exposable et où elle essayait d'être une parfaite maîtresse de maison, mais on voit aussi toute sa force et le choix assumé qu'elle a fait depuis déjà longtemps au moment où elle a fait ce documentaire d'être elle-même et de ne plus chercher à être aimable mais d'être elle-même.

Le travail de Louise Bourgeois, comme sa parole, sont d'une telle richesse qu'un documentaire qui les présente ne peut être qu'incontournable.

Dans ce film et par sa propre voix, on apprend sa mythologie, le fioul de sa créativité, et sans en dire plus en tant que femme, qu'artiste et être humain, je trouve qu'écouter ce que Louise Bourgeois avait à dire sur sa vie est d'une puissance émotionnelle et intellectuelle indispensable.

Louise Bourgeois: the spider, the mistress and the tangerine

For once the concept of my blog ( writing the articles in French and English) and the film I am talking about work the same way.

Here's a documentary on Louise Bourgeois, an artist born in France who lived from 1938 until her death in 2010 in the US of A. LB travels in this documentary with her extraordinary intelligence, talent and her thick French accent, and the strength of the documentary is that it let her express herself. This film is not structured by her biography but by the main themes in her artistic career, which of course are deeply and strongly linked to her biography. Because after all as her assistant Jerry says (in the film) her opuses were a way of transforming a private diary into Art.

This film starts by showing LB in her workshop and she explains, touching and feeling a statue as if she were blind, totally involved in the sense of touch what it means to sculpt. The film-maker wants to add something and speaks about the difference between men and woman, and LB, answers politely but sharply that this is not what she was talking about then she adds:

« But it is difficult to be a woman and to be likeable, you see, this desire to be likeable it is really a pain in the neck, how are you going to be likeable and be yourself? »

And then as always in this documentary we understand that Louise Bourgeois was not only a fantastic artist but that she also had an insight on her work and on the problematic of women at work, when society mostly ask them to be likeable, and when everyone still wants to believe that women are soft and loving, while they can be rough and violent as much and even more than men! She used to live with this dilemma trying to be a perfect hostess, and an artist, but at the moment this documentary was shot, she had stopped for a long time trying to be likeable and did the real work, that made her one of the most important artist of the twentieth and twenty first century.

Louise Bourgeois's work, as much as her speeches are so rich that a documentary which presents them has to be very important, and it took me time to write about this one because all I heard in it was precious to me as a woman, as a human being and as an artist, and I didn't know how to deliver it the right way.
