The White Stripes Under Great Northern White Lights

Quand j'ai appris il y a quelques mois dans le très bon blog the playlist (qui a eu ces derniers jours des ptits problèmes avec google) que les white stripes allaient sortir un documentaire sur leur tournée dans les petites villes du Canada, je n'avais qu'une hâte: le voir immédiatement!

D'abord parce que les White Stripes sont un puissant groupe de rock, et par puissant je parle et du son, et des émotions qu'ils génèrent. Ensuite parce que leur démarche et leur mentalité est profondément artistique. Comme dit Jack dans ce même film dont je vais vous parler dans quelques lignes « les whites stripes sont à la fois le groupe le plus artificiel du monde et aussi le plus réel ». Les voir au travail est une opportunité que j'attendais depuis longtemps.

Le père noël, qui est bien généreux, m'a apporté noël dernier, leur dvd de gig the white stripes under blackpool lights. Il est tourné en super 8 avec superbe grain. j'ai été bluffé par l'esthétique de cette captation, ainsi que par l'implication et l'énergie incroyable de Jack et Meg du premier au dernier morceau!

Le concept était donc pour Jack et Meg qui n'avaient jamais jouer au Canada de faire une tournée couvrant toutes les provinces de ce grand et froid pays. Et aussi de faire chaque jours des concerts improvisés en ne donnant le lieu de l'événement, au début qu'une heure avant, puis internet et l'information allant très très vite, 10 minutes avant le gig.

On voit donc Meg et Jack jouer dans des bars, sur un bateau, dans un bus, au bowling... Leur rencontre la plus touchante étant (pour moi) celle avec les aînés indiens qui bien que très âgées tapent du pieds, puis font écouter leur musique aux stripes tout en proposant un peu de square dance.

Le traitement de l'image est époustouflant, parfois on revient au noir et blanc granuleux du 16 mm, il doit aussi y avoir du 16 mm couleurs, les paysages sont filmés dans toute leur splendeur laissant le temps s'écouler à grande vitesse, les nuages s'estomper et la marée passer.

Les white stripes sont des artistes, il ne cherchent pas seulement comme tout groupe de rock qui se respecte à devenir des dieux vivant peu importe comment, leur but est d'aller vers plus de création. Et Jack explique que l'inspiration ne lui tombe pas du ciel, qu'il se met des contraintes, se met au boulot coûte que coûte: Il utilise les mêmes instrument depuis dix ans, ils n'utilisent pas de set liste, il fait en sortes que la scène ne soit pas arrangée de façon pratique pour qu'il se passe quelque chose, leur concert n'est pas réglé comme une horloge comme beaucoup de gig qu'on voit maintenant, tout peu arriver car c'est la musique le moteur de tout, et le but c'est que tout puisse arriver. Les white stripes ont un amour réel de la scène!

Le jour où j'ai acheté Elephant, j'étais à une fête de famille, et voulant écouter le disque immédiatement je l'ai mis sur la chaine de mes grands parents ,personne n'a protesté, et tout le monde a dansé sur 7 nation army. Ce riff est si prenant qu'il ne se limite à aucunes générations. Il y a dans la musique des white stripes quelque chose d'universel de l'ordre du paganisme et de l'inconscient du monde. C'est pour ça que j'ai été touchée qu'ils demandent aux vieux indiens de leur transmettre un peu de leur tradition orale, ainsi la boucle se bouclait entre l'énergie qu'ils déploient et les traditions les plus anciennes du monde ( ce passage m'a beaucoup rappelé et je ne pense pas que ce soit un hasard du tout le documentaire de Robert Kramer, Route One USA.).

A voir absolument!

When I learnt a few months ago, in the excellent blog the playlist ( which had a few problems with google recently) that the white stripes were about to release a documentary on their canadian tour, I was very excited and wanted to see it immediately!

Many reasons explain this excitement, first because the white stripes are a powerful rock band, by that I mean that their sound and the emotions they're generating are powerful, and also because the way they work and the way they think is deeply artistic.

As Jack says in this same film I am going to talk about in a few lines « the white stripes is altogether the most artificial and the most real band. » To see them at work was an opportunity that I was expecting for a long time.

Last year Santa, which is very generous, brought me for christmas their dvd the white stripes under Blackpool lights. it was shot in super 8, with a splendid, sexy and organic old school grain, I've been swept away by the aesthetic , and the incredible commitment and energy of Jack and Meg. From the beginning till the end, they were entirely devoted to the music as Jack says « the music is in charge of us ».

The concept was for Meg and Jack , who had never toured in Canada, to cover every provinces of this large and cold country, and in every places to make improvised gigs. At first they gave the locations of the gig an hour before, but then with internet and all high speed communication tools just ten minutes before was enough.

So we witness Meg and Jack playing in bars, on a boat, in a bus, at the bowling..

To me, their most touching meeting is with the indian elders. Even though they looked quite old they were sensitive to the music, and made the white stripe listen to their square dance .

The cinematography is breathtaking, sometimes grainy white and black 16 mm is used, sometimes color 16 mm ( I believe). The landscapes are filmed like zen moment in their beauty and their ugliness ( both coexistent most of the time, nature being amazing and cities quite ugly)

The white stripes try to be as creative as they can, Jack explains that inspiration doesn't come like that and most of the time it's through constrictions and hard labour that he find something interesting:

They've been using the same instruments from the beginning, there is no set list, and no preparation of the stage, instruments are far away from one another which forces Jack to cross the stage. This gives opportunity for things to happen, and while other band tend to control everything for perfection, the white stripes give all their energy in the moment and in the performance, anything can happen and anything is welcomed.

It's not a matter of making money, but of expressing oneself,and that's what I love about them. The day I bought Elephant there was family at home, and as I was impatient to listen to this album I put in the CD player, and you know what? everyone moved on 7 nation army especially my grand mother! In the white stripes music, there is something universal which touches paganism. This is why I was so moved when Jack asked the indian elder to transmit a bit of their oral tradition, and the loop between rock and roll modern paganism, and the ancients world was closed ( this episode also reminded me, and I don't think that is chance of Robert Kramer's extraordinary documentary Route One USA)

The white stripes under great white northern lights is a must see.
