The Devil and Daniel Johnston

La Version française suit.
Stuck in bed with a nasty infectious sore throat, I prefer watching movies instead of sleeping, and yes, that would be wonderful if the feverish rest could also feed the soul. So that's in the burning light of the dieing sun that I discovered the life of Daniel Johnston filmed with talent by Jeff Feuerzeig.
We all remember of the tee-shirt “Hi, how are you?” That Kurt Cobain was constantly wearing, so the drawing of this tee shirt is the work of the indie legend Daniel Johnston.

This man, from childhood had been inhabited by incredibly frenetic creativity not very compatible, alas with everyday life obligations. But even though in his family opinion this delusion of grandeur would lead nowhere, Johnston always found a way to be at the good place at the good time. In 1985 not long after its creation, MTV came to Austin, texas, to make a show about the local scene, and Johnston who has not be chosen, successfully hijacked the show, and played his songs on national TV.This is the story of a man who looks like the lunatic who comes to talk to you and ask weird questions when your depressed. But this man writes music and lyrics that touch people souls.
This documentary uses all the resources Johnston created since childhood to express himself and tell his story the way he sees it: it's audio tapes, films, drawings, animations, comic strips...The artist forged himself as a legend, considered himself as a character, why denying that? His self-obsession, this way of making art out of every events and dramas in his life is integrated in this opus, and the film can from this become an extension of the work of Johnston without judging the pain ,the way he works, made around him, but taking it in consideration.

Daniel Johnston himself is not a very cultivated man, besides his Beatles obsession his knowledge of music and art is slightly limited, and that' s the people around him who relate him to traditions. I particularly like the testimony of Louis Black, the editor of the Austin Chronicle. Johnston came to see him with one of his homemade audiotapes, and that's how he became a fan. Anyway, he explains that one evening he was in bed with pneumonia and a horse fever, and somebody called asking him if he knew Johnston, this one had seriously blown a fuse, and was preaching against Satan splashing water in a river in the bleak of winter. Black has always been touched by these amazing creators that Van Gogh or Artaud were, and he always thought that he wouldn't be the bad guy that gets the artist committed, but he had to do the pedestrian thing, because in reality there was noway he could handle this.People are altogether scared by Johnston's madness ( he provoked a plane accident) and fascinated by his creativity.
This documentary gives hope in the human race, first because things are getting better for Daniel Johnston now, and then because even in this world only focused on economy and money making, there are people who only live to create and they succeed , and receive enough love to go on.

In terms of cinema, the filming, the fidelity to the low fidelity of the tapes and super8 film is superb. The reconstitutions seem real. I find very clever the way the ideas or visions of the witnesses and friends are exploited to bring dynamism to the editing. For example when Kathy McCarty explains that she sees Jeff Tartakof (Johnston's manager) as Danny Rose, the character of devoted agent played by Woody Allen in Broadway Danny Rose. Instead of using an extract to show about which film she's talking about, the director uses a montage of different scenes from the film that shows who Danny Rose is and in what Jeff Tartakof is similar to him. This is the talent of this documentary, to not only tell altogether the life of an exceptional artist who escapes from all movements, but also to integrate and assume the way he works on himself as a fiction, as legend. Also his family and friends are not treated like a bunch of villains and sidekicks, but as talented individual equally fascinating. It is not only a film about a man, but a film about a community.
